Christopher Dean

Christopher Dean was born on October 22nd 1958 in Lincoln, England. He was a gifted artist when young and began playing the guitar at the age of thirteen. He found himself captivated by every aspect of the instrument.

Coming from a family where a long tradition of engineering and skilled craftsmanship ran in the blood, he was drawn instinctively to study the form and construction of the guitar. This, combined with a love of playing, especially the music of Bach and Villa Lobos, drove him to produce his first instrument at the age of seventeen. This initial effort came from teaching himself from a book and from this defining moment he began to develop within himself his natural aptitude and talent, and to channel his energies toward becoming a great guitar maker.

It was a natural step to progress to a three year full time course at the London College of Furniture where he studied the craft of guitar making in depth in a stimulating liberal environment where he could develop and experiment, discuss ideas, and visit established makers such as Paul Fischer and José Romanillos.

After leaving college and travelling around the world, Christopher was offered the chance to move to Oxfordshire to work alongside one of Britain's leading guitar makers, Paul Fischer, a pillar of the classical guitar establishment. They established a positive relationship which was to establish Christopher Dean within the mainstream of European lutherie.

In 1985 Christopher set up his own full time professional workshop, selling guitars all around the world to an admiring and steadily growing clientelle while still only 27, in a world where many figures take decades to become established. In his workshop in the Cotswolds with an inspiring view of one of England's loveliest landscapes he works to evolve and develop whilst achieving a consistently great sound with beauty, balance, sustain and luminosity of tone.

Today his instruments are highly sought after and are chosen by leading players for both their concerts and their recordings.

  Philosophy:

"I love making guitars. I love the thrill of selecting aged timber from my store and I relish the prospect of transforming, as if by some form of alchemy, those beautiful but inert woods into a vibrant, beautiful and musical object that cries out to be used. I look to achieve a result that, upon first sight, looks "right" in all its proportions. I am motivated also by the prospect of the effect the guitar might have on its new owner. It is gratifying to know that my efforts have made a difference and that I have acknowledged the passion for making beautiful music in others.

"Many players are looking to expand the guitar's repertoire and play with louder instruments and to play to larger audiences. I strive to create a full sounding guitar but refuse to lose sight of what first seduced me, namely that sweet, rich and beautiful 'guitariness'..."
